Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill Calls for Extension of Abortion Ban to Combat Demographic Crisis

Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill called for the ban on “inducing women to have abortions” to be extended throughout Russia to combat the demographic crisis.

Direct speech: “Unfortunately, the number of abortions in the country still remains high. Thank God, separate initiatives are appearing at the legislative level aimed at reducing the number of abortions. Not so long ago in Mordovia, for example, a law was passed banning inducement to abortion. I hope that that this initiative will be supported in other regions and at the federal level…

There really is a problem with the population in Russia. A huge country, but the population is completely insufficient. Not to mention even the economy. <…> Indeed, we need more people, this is an obvious fact, everyone recognizes it – both politicians and sociologists.”

Details: In early August, deputies of the state assembly of the Republic of Mordovia for the first time adopted a law that prohibits the promotion of abortion in the region. Subsequently, a similar law was adopted by deputies of the Tver region.

Earlier this week, the occupation authorities of Crimea announced that private clinics on the peninsula refused to perform abortion procedures. Later, the authorities of the Kursk region reported the same thing.
