Maintaining Brain Health: Tips from Neuroscience Consultant Dr. Jennifer Newson PhD

Jakarta

There are a number of ways you can try to maintain brain health. Starting from maintaining food intake, exercising regularly, to doing certain techniques and games to improve the brain’s ability to work.

Neuroscience Consultant at Children of Earth Skincare, Dr Jennifer Newson PhD, explained that basically, the brain’s ability to function is very dependent on experience. This means that much of a person’s brain health is determined by the environment in which they live and the life experiences they have had.

“There are many factors that influence a person’s brain health, from diet and consumption of processed foods, to how regularly they exercise and how well they sleep,” explained Dr Newson, quoted from Mirror News UK, Saturday (12/11/2023).

“We also live in an increasingly human-made chemical environment and it has been proven that some harmful chemicals found in commonly used products can cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially disrupting brain function and health,” he added.

According to him, brain health influences the way a person thinks, feels and acts. Of course, this is supported by several factors such as consuming healthy food, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and learning new knowledge and skills.

But apart from that, there are also several things you can try to keep your brain ‘youthful’ so that your health is maintained. Anything?

Meditation

30 minutes of meditation a day can help keep the brain young and healthy. A study published in Behavioral Brain Research shows that daily meditation for eight weeks can help reduce negative feelings and anxiety; and improves attention, working memory, and memory.

Eat a healthy and balanced diet

Intake of foods rich in vitamins and nutrients can help improve brain health. Dr Newton explained, by reducing the amount of processed food and increasing the intake of foods high in nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, flavonoids, vitamins B, D and E, and choline, brain cognitive function will improve.
