Croatian Defense Minister Mario Banozic was fired on Saturday after he caused a traffic accident that killed one person and seriously injured another.
This, as European Pravda writes, reports AP.
Defense Minister Mario Banozic was overtaking a truck in bad weather when he crashed into a minibus coming from the opposite direction, authorities said. The driver of the minibus died, and Banozic was hospitalized with serious injuries.
“I have removed Minister Banozic from his duties as defense minister, given the extraordinary circumstances,” Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said shortly after the first results of the investigation into the accident in eastern Croatia were published.
Zdravko Jakop, who had previously been Secretary of State in the ministry, was appointed Minister of Defense.
“We express our condolences to the family of the deceased,” government spokesman Marko Milic said earlier on Saturday.
Deputy prosecutor of the eastern city of Vukovar Biljana Luburic said that samples of Banozic’s blood and urine were taken for examination.
According to the accident report, Banozic overtook another vehicle “without ensuring that it could be done safely and without taking the weather conditions into account.”
He suffered a contusion to the head and brain, as well as numerous injuries to his body. He remains under medical care, but his injuries are not life-threatening.
It is known that he was alone in the car and was on his way to hunt, and at the time of the accident he was wearing hunting costume.
