Clara Brugada has been designated this Saturday by the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) as a candidate for the head of Government of Mexico City, despite having placed second in internal preference polls.
In addition, Morena named candidates for eight other governorships in the country and, after applying the gender criterion, 5 of them are women.
Of them, only two (in Morelos and Veracruz) were appointed by popular vote.
These are the candidates:
Edward Ramirez Aguilar – Chiapas. Alma Alcaraz – Guanajuato.Claudia Delgadillo – Jalisco.Margarita Gonzales – Morelos.Alejandro Armenta – Puebla.Javier May – Tabasco. Dew Nahle – Veracruz. Javier Diaz – Yucatan.
Brugada, former mayor of Iztapalapa, obtained 26.7% of support in the polls and was surpassed by Omar García Harfuch, who achieved 40.5% of the preferences.
However, a gender equality principle of the party positioned Brugada as a candidate for the elections that will take place in June 2024.
When announcing the candidacies, Morena’s national leader, Mario Delgado, explained that they were defined by a gender parity clause that would privilege better-positioned women over men, and that if the result included more men, adjustments would be made. to reach the necessary balance, even if they had not finished in the first place.
After the announcement, García Harfuch thanked him for his victory in the polls, ensuring that he respected gender parity and the party’s decision.
For her part, the former mayor of Iztapalapa stated that she will continue to “advance in the transformation that was initiated” by the country’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and that she will fight for a “progressive city of rights and freedoms.”
