Worrying data for the levels of cybersecurity in our country. The attacks increase and become increasingly difficult to counter.
Once again, Italy finds itself at the bottom of the table. And not just any one, but one of the most important: that of cybersecurity. With the increase in the use of the internet in many aspects of citizens’ daily lives, cybersecurity has become increasingly important to ensure the privacy, security and integrity of information.
The data emerging from the report on cybersecurity in Italy is very worrying – computer-idea.it
Italy, however, seems not to be up to the challenges of this important historical moment. These data are even more worrying when you consider the fragile geopolitical balance the entire world finds itself in right now. This worrying fact was highlighted by the report by Clusit, the Italian Association for IT Securitypresented at the international Security Summit.
Worrying data, which could even worsen in the future
The data contained within the report, unfortunately, leaves no room for doubt. In the first half of 2023 Italy has suffered a number of cyber attacks 40% higher than the average for the rest of the world (which stands at 11%). The president of Clusit, Gabriele Faggioli, highlighted that already in 2022 there had been clear signs that Italy was the target of many cyber attacks.
2023 confirmed this trend and, unfortunately, also confirmed it Italy’s difficulties in countering these attacks. According to the Clusit report, the attacks that Italian systems suffered in the first half of 2023 were more than 1300, a figure far higher than that of 2022 (when around 207 attacks were recorded per month).
There is a large growth in phishing attacks, a sneaky scam that less experienced users easily fall into – computer-idea.it
The figure is even more worrying if you compare today’s data with that of 2018: there was a 300% growth in cyber attacks. In the global total, again in the first half of 2023, attacks on Italian systems represent 9.6% of total attacks.
The objectives are mainly i IT systems of healthcare entities, but attacks on insurance and educational entities are also growing. What is most evident, however, is that most of these attacks are due to the wars currently underway. Many of these episodes, in fact, concerned Italy and all the other countries of the pro-Ukrainian bloc, evidence of how the origin of these attacks is often Russia.
Few surprises regarding the attack methods: most happen thanks to malware and many through ransomwarebut DDoS attacks and, above all, phishing and social engineering attacks are also growing (i.e. attacks in which an attempt is made to deceive the user into entering credentials on a screen that appears real but in reality is not ).
