Astronomers report an expected geomagnetic storm that will hit us on November 11-12. According to data from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA), it will be of the G2-G3 class. Disruption to communications networks and even internet outages are possible in parts of Europe and Asia, and overnight on the 12th and over the US.
The aurora borealis is also expected, and according to the forecasts, it will also be visible at a lower altitude. The countries that will observe the aurora are Germany, Poland, Denmark and the Scandinavian countries, as well as Canada and the northern states of the USA.
We remind you that last Sunday in the sky above Bulgaria, an aurora borealis was noticed, which is a rare phenomenon for our latitudes. It was a precursor to a strong magnetic storm.
Magnetic storms are divided into five categories – G1 “weak”, G2 “medium”, G3 “strong”, G4 “very strong” and G5 “extremely strong”, writes Meteo Balkans.
The cause of the expected magnetic storm is the plasma released from a huge coronal hole that forms on the Sun. Coronal holes are a distinct region that occurs as the Sun’s magnetic field begins to open up and allow the solar wind to escape.
They appear dark in ultraviolet images because they are relatively colder and denser plasma formations in the hot and highly diluted solar corona. The cooler plasma, whose composition is similar to that of the chromosphere. This phenomenon can form in a day and can persist in the crown for weeks or months.
