Norwegian Supermarkets Price Comparison: Meny, Joker, Kiwi, Spar

million Norwegians shop every week at . At the same time, it is becoming increasingly expensive to buy food. The prices of food and alcoholic beverages have increased by 8.5 per cent over the past 12 months.

A price increase of 6 per cent together with sky-high interest rates has caused many to reach for the savings knife.

– Too expensive

Comrades Bjørn Phillip Hylland Curtis and Sturla Tjåland feel the economic downturn. Shopping at Joker is never an option.

– It is too expensive. I shop at Kiwi because it’s cheaper. Joker is not an alternative anyway, says Bjørn.

But my friend Sturla likes to shop at Meny.

– The most important reason for shopping at Meny is the selection. Here I get both bags and sacks because they also have cheap brands such as First Price.

For theology student Nora Tobiassen, the supermarket is too expensive.

– I have always avoided Meny and Joker when I go shopping, unless it is a specific item I must have. I know that it is more expensive than low price. It’s been a long time, but now it’s even clearer that I can’t afford it, she says.

.

But how much more expensive is the shopping basket at supermarkets such as Meny and Spar? How is the household budget affected by buying Sunday breakfast at Joker?

A shopping basket of over 30 items in dinnerware, basic items, cleaning items, snacks and chocolate shows that you lose a lot of money at Meny, Spar and .

Kiwi is without a doubt the cheapest. Spar had more , and therefore comes out better than Meny.

You can find the entire price test further down in the case.

In summary, the price test shows:

There are large price differences for individual products at Kiwi and Joker. But the same shopping basket at Meny and Spar also hurts the wallet.

Here are some examples where the supermarkets and Joker charge handsomely compared to Kiwi.

Lerøy’s salmon fillet is NOK 50 more expensive per package at Spar. Menu adds NOK 20. Grillstad Jubelsalami is NOK 30 more expensive at Joker. Save adds NOK 18. You lose NOK 15 on a four-pack of Pepsi Max at Spar.

Basic items such as bread, eggs, cold cuts and butter are on average 10 per cent more expensive at Meny. Bread and butter are both 14 and 15 percent more expensive. At Spar, the salami gets a price increase of 45 per cent.

Joker is often the local shop at the cabin. If you buy the breakfast here, you must participate in a price increase of 20 percent. The salami gets a 75 percent increase at Joker.

Joker does not carry five of the items in the shopping cart. Here you can compare the prices at the supermarkets with Kiwi.

Menu: – We are not satisfied

Menu dislikes that they are the most expensive supermarket in the test.

– We are not satisfied with this momentary test and have adjusted several of the prices down. We have been a bit unlucky with the test basket and have, among other things, included few of our offer items. We want to be the cheapest and best supermarket with the largest selection, the best seasonal produce and hundreds of weekly offers, says Nina Horn Hynne, communications manager at Meny.

2023 has been extremely tiring for the Meny chain. The supermarket chain fell back 0.4 percent and is losing shares to Kiwi.

– Do you fear that the development will continue?

– Since last summer, we have had a good development. People value selection, fresh produce, local food, service and food inspiration, and look forward to doing their Christmas shopping with us.

– What do you think about the fact that you are 14 and 15 per cent above Kiwis on bread and butter?

– Such momentary tests with few and random items in the basket have different results. For example, we have the same price as the low price on all First Price products, including First Price bread, margarine and table margarine, she says.

– Difficult to compete on price

– We find that price competition in the grocery market is tough, also within the convenience store segment, says Anna Kappler, communications manager for the Joker and Spar chains.

She says they work hard to compete on prices.

– But our stores have a significantly lower level of turnover than the discount chains, and unfortunately we do not have the opportunity to compete as hard on price as them on absolutely all goods, she says, and explains:

– Compared to the low-price chains, customers can sometimes experience a large distance between individual products, such as at Jubelsalami in this case. As an affordable alternative, this week Joker is offering Tulip 200g salami for just NOK 24.90.

The prices have been checked in Oslo, 7 November. Nettavisen did not buy the goods, but looked at the price tags.
