Extended Transition Period for New Pension System: Council of Ministers Decision

There will be more time for the transition to the new pension system. The Council of Ministers decided this on the proposal of Minister Schouten for poverty policy, participation and pensions. The change had already been promised to the Senate during the discussion of the pension law, which had insisted on sufficient time for a careful transition.

The Future of Pensions Act stated that pension funds have until January 1, 2027 to switch to the new system. That period has now been extended until January 1, 2028.

The discussion of the new pension law by the House of Representatives and the Senate took a lot of time. As a result, the time for the funds to do this carefully has become short, the government justifies the postponement.

Change in law

The bill now goes to the Council of State for advice. The amendment to the law that is being submitted to the Council of State removes the previously mentioned date from the Pension Act and now mentions the new date in an order in council (AMvB). The government will soon issue an Order in Council extending the period until January 1, 2028.
