UNRWA Chairman Mourns Over More Than 100 Staff Deaths in Gaza War

Jakarta

Head of the UN Agency Supporting Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said more than 100 of his staff had died as a result of the war in Gaza, Palestine. He feels deep sorrow and hopes there will be a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

“Devastated. More than 100 UNRWA colleagues confirmed dead in one month. Parents, teachers, nurses, doctors, support staff,” said UNRWA chairman Philippe Lazzarini on X, previously Twitter, reported by AFP, Friday (10/11/2023).

“UNRWA mourns, Palestinians mourn, Israel mourns. To end this tragedy requires a ceasefire now,” he added.

The UN agency said 101 of its employees had been killed since the war between Israel and Hamas erupted on October 7. The people who died ranged from teachers to doctors.

“They are teachers, principals, engineers, doctors, psychologists, support staff, sanitation and technology workers,” he said.

UN Humanitarian Chief Martin Griffiths said he was ‘deeply saddened to hear this incredibly tragic news’.

“These colleagues are the fire of hope and humanity,” he said in X.

“Our thoughts are with their families and all our brave UNRWA colleagues,” he continued.

It is known that Israel declared war after Hamas carried out a surprise attack on Israeli territory which killed at least 1,400 people. Israel then bombarded Gaza on the pretext of destroying Hamas.

The Israeli attack has killed 11,000 people. Most of them are civilians, including more than 4,000 children.
