It seems like a matter of time before the Netherlands loses fifth place on the UEFA coefficient list. Chaser France once again performed excellently last week and is well on its way to taking over that crucial fifth position from the Netherlands.
France already reduced the gap to the Netherlands in the three previous rounds to 0.769 points. That lead has now shrunk further. The margin is still only 0.003 points. And while PSV was still doing well against Lens in the Champions League (1-0 win).
On Thursday, France took excellent revenge for the coefficient downer in the Philips Stadium. AZ and Ajax lost, while Toulouse, Stade Rennais, Olympique Marseille (all three wins) and Lille OSC (draw) collected many points.
Thanks to the successful Thursday, France has almost caught up with the Netherlands. Moreover, all six French teams are still on course for wintering and therefore also a substantial bonus. That cannot be said about the Dutch teams.
The Netherlands already has two direct starting tickets next season
With the current form of the French and Dutch clubs, it will almost take a miracle for our country to end the season as number five on the coefficient list. Only then can the Netherlands enter the Champions League directly with three teams in the 2025/2026 season.
Otherwise, the Netherlands will have to focus on sixth place, which does not seem to be in danger for the Eredivisie. The lead over Portugal is more than 7 points.
It would be strange if the Netherlands did not start with at least two teams in the Champions League in the 2025/2026 season. That will certainly be the case next season. The top two of this Eredivisie season will be allowed to enter the million-dollar competition in the next football season.
