Wolfsburg. The city of Wolfsburg emerged as the winner in a recent ranking when it comes to quality of life and value for money. In the evaluation carried out by a news editorial team – which compares the placement of a large city in the city ranking of the Institute of German Economics (IW) Cologne with the cost of living calculated by IW – Wolfsburg secured the top spot in the price-performance index (PLI) of major German cities. This emerges from a press release from the city.
The PLI shows how much quality a city offers in relation to the cost of living. Wolfsburg stands out in this rating for its exceptional combination of good quality of life and low cost of living. The costs for living space, for example, are around two thirds lower than in Munich, which makes Wolfsburg the most economically attractive choice for people who are looking for a great environment at affordable prices.
“The top position in the ranking confirms our commitment to making Wolfsburg lovable and worth living in. This is further proof that it is not always necessary to live in expensive cities in order to enjoy a high quality of life,” emphasizes Mayor Dennis Weilmann. “The combination of affordable housing, high quality child care, a variety of leisure options, sustainable urban development and good prospects for the economic future offers families and skilled workers an attractive place to live.”
Affordable rental cost level
Wolfsburg is at the top of the ranking, followed by major cities such as Leipzig, Braunschweig, Dresden, Magdeburg, Halle, Chemnitz and Heilbronn. The differences between cities are primarily due to housing costs. The IW certifies that Wolfsburg has a high quality of life and at the same time an affordable level of rental costs, while cities with a similarly high or in some cases slightly higher quality of life fall back in the ranking, primarily due to higher housing costs.
