Israel will announce the time of the breaks three hours in advance, Kirby said.
“The Israelis have told us that there will be no military operations in these areas during the pause and that this process begins today,” Kirby said.
The US welcomed the development, calling the pauses “steps in the right direction”.
“We have urged the Israelis to minimize civilian casualties and to do everything possible to minimize those casualties,” Kirby said, adding that the pauses would provide “a few hours of respite” for civilians to move.
The breaks will also provide a “short window of opportunity” for the possible safe transfer of hostages held by Hamas, Kirby said.
