The residents of Portugal will be allowed to go to the polls early in March. On Tuesday, Prime Minister António Costa offered his resignation due to a police investigation into possible cronyism and corruption. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the president of Portugal, announced the new elections today.
He will wait to dissolve parliament until the budget is approved later this month.
Until today, it was not certain whether there would be new elections. The Socialist Party has an absolute majority in parliament and it was also possible that that party would form a new government.
After the prime minister’s resignation, five people were arrested, including the prime minister’s chief of staff. The Minister of Infrastructure has been indicted. An investigation into Costa itself is also underway.
Costa denies that he has consciously done anything wrong, but believes he cannot be prime minister if his integrity is doubted.
