Ginger as a Hematoprotector for Tuberculosis Patients: Insights from a Lung Specialist at Persahabatan Hospital

Jakarta (ANTARA) –

Lung specialist (pulmonologist) Persahabatan Hospital, dr. Fanny Fachrucha Sp.P said that ginger has the benefit of reducing the side effects of drugs in tuberculosis (TBC) patients which can cause inflammation in the liver.

“What can be done to reduce these side effects is to have hematoprotectors such as curcuma or ginger which is effective as a hematoprotector,” said Fanny in a discussion on ginger innovation for health in Jakarta, Thursday.

Fanny says substances curcumin contained in ginger acts as a hematoprotector which can reduce or prevent the side effects of liver damage due to inflammation from drugs.

He explained that for TB patients, during treatment four combinations of anti-microbial drugs will be given, namely isonazid, rifampicin pyrazinamideand ethambutol which must be taken regularly for at least six months.

Of the four drug combinations, three of them (isonazidrifampicin and pyrazinamide) can cause hepatotoxicity because the drug passes through the liver and can cause inflammation in the liver.

This combination of treatment for TB patients can also interfere with the course of treatment if it is combined with liver damage which often occurs in 10-20 percent of patients.

However, research developments show the effectiveness of the substance curcumin can reduce inflammation in the liver due to administration of drugs containing isoniazid and rifampicin and can improve hepatotoxicity.

Consumption of drugs containing ginger will be stopped if the TB patient’s treatment is complete, but patients can continue to get supplements or vitamins containing other ginger to maintain the immune system and increase appetite.

Fanny said that currently TB disease in Indonesia is still a concern because its cases are ranked second in the world after India.

Treatment with a combination of anti-microbial drugs is still the main treatment for TB patients in order to improve the patient’s quality of life.

“Because this is a bacterial infection, we have to continue to give medicine and currently it is a combination of four types of microbes, so it is given hematoprotektor “To protect the liver can usually improve the patient’s quality of life so that treatment can run smoothly,” explained Fanny.
