In retaliation for the raid by the Palestinian armed group Hamas, Israel carried out intensive air strikes on the Gaza Strip, causing injuries to many children and amputations. After the painkillers wore off, the girl cried in pain, “I want my legs back.”
Agence France-Presse reported that Baz, a 13-year-old Palestinian girl, said at the Ganyounis Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza: “I don’t want a prosthetic leg.” Whenever the painkillers wore off and she opened her eyes, she would look at the bandaged stump.
Her mother Lamia, 47, said Baz lost both legs in an airstrike last week and four of her relatives were killed.
Hamas’s raid on Israel on October 7 killed more than 1,400 people, most of whom were civilians. The Ministry of Health in Gaza under Hamas said that 1,569 people have been killed in Gaza, including more than 4,000 children.
Lamia said two of her daughters and two grandchildren were killed. “They were blown to pieces” and could only be identified by their earrings and toes.
Baz, whose face and arms were covered in scars, asked, “How am I going to go back to school, when my friends can walk and I can’t?” Lamia tried to reassure her, saying, “I’ll be here for you. You There is still a long way to go.”
In the burn unit of the hospital, fourteen-year-old Aga and her fifteen-year-old sister Sarah were lying on adjacent beds.
Their mother, sitting between two hospital beds, holding back tears, said that the air raid on October 12th killed Sarah’s sister and 12-year-old brother.
Aga recalled: “When they transferred me here, I asked the nurse to help me up, and it turned out that my leg had been amputated. I went through a lot of pain, but I thank God that I am still alive.”
Aga is determined not to let her injury determine her future. “I will get prosthetics and continue studying so that I can realize my dream of becoming a doctor. I will be strong for myself and my family,” she said.
The director of the hospital explained that due to the large number of casualties and dwindling medical resources, medical staff often have no choice but to amputate limbs to prevent life-threatening complications.
