Opera House Presents National and Arab Songs in Solidarity with Gaza

The Egyptian Opera House presents many national and Arab songs in its concerts scheduled for Thursday and Friday, in response to the events in Gaza, including a concert by the Alexandria Opera Ensemble, in which the song “Ancient Jerusalem” is performed, and another concert by the National Arab Music Ensemble, in which Arabic songs for Palestine are presented, such as “ “Zahrat al-Mada’in” and “I now have a gun.”

The Sayed Darwish Theater (Alexandria Opera House) will witness a concert led by Maestro Moheb Fouad, in which a number of singers will perform a group of songs from the good old days, including the song “Ancient Jerusalem,” one of Fairouz’s most famous songs, written and composed by the Rahbani brothers.

Music critic Fawzi Ibrahim considered this interaction with events “important and required,” adding, in statements to Asharq Al-Awsat, that this “is the role required of all outlets and entities that express the voice of soft powers, which is essentially the voice of the street.”

Ibrahim pointed out that “patriotic and enthusiastic songs were and still are an important means of moral mobilization for soldiers and peoples. Especially since it mimics people’s feelings.” The presence of these songs in opera concerts is now considered very important as a form of solidarity with the people of Gaza.

The Arab National Music Ensemble, led by Maestro Hazem Al-Qasabji, will present a concert (Friday) at the Republic Theater in Cairo, which includes a number of patriotic and enthusiastic songs, such as “Our Egyptianness, Our Patriotism,” “Ada Al-Nahar,” “My Sweetheart,” “Oh My Country,” and “My Country is Sweet.” “Zahrat al-Mada’in,” ​​and “I now have a gun.”

Ibrahim described the soft forces of singers, authors, and composers as “expressing the voice of the street,” and considered that “the artist has his weapon with which he can support the cause and support the brothers in Gaza,” hoping that “art will continue to play this role, and that more will be presented.” These parties.

The National Arab Music Ensemble was established in 1989. With the aim of collecting the Arab musical and lyrical heritage, and working to re-present it in an academic and scientific manner, so that new generations can learn about the Arab musical heritage, and to preserve this heritage and protect it from extinction.

The Egyptian Ministry of Culture had announced the postponement of the 32nd session of the Arab Music Festival, which was scheduled to be held from October 24 until November 2. The postponement decision came a week after the outbreak of the Gaza War.

Singers Angham, Asala, Ali Al-Hajjar, Medhat Saleh, Hamza Namira, Ahmed Saad, Mai Farouk, Marwa Naji, Tamer Ashour, Fouad Zabadi, Ayat Farouk and others were scheduled to participate in the festival, according to what was stated in a press conference before the festival was postponed.
