Alzheimer’s disease is something that affects a huge number of people, and leads to difficult periods for entire families, families and circles of friends… Yet the scale of the problem sometimes seems underexposed – in society, but also in science. There is no good treatment yet, but – a lot of information can be found in the body with which we may be able to prevent a lot of misery.
And that information is exactly what Betty Tijms has focused on. As a psychologist and neuroinformatician at the Alzheimer Center in the Amsterdam UMC, she maps complex systems of proteins. This way we can hopefully recognize the development of Alzheimer’s at an earlier age and prescribe tailor-made treatment.
