With a businessman killed in his own home, the Minister of Internal Affairs makes a controversial statement: ‘Romania is one of the safest countries in the EU!’
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Cătălin Predoiu, stated that Romania is one of the safest countries in the European Union, adding that Romanian businessmen “do not pay for three lines of guards 24 hours a day to be protected as others do from other European countries”, reports News.ro. Predoiu’s statements come in the context in which a Sibiu businessman was assassinated in his own home. At the moment the aggressors are still nowhere to be found (more here).

“I have been speaking recently incidentally with a lot of Romanian citizens who travel abroad frequently, either citizens who live in the European diaspora, or citizens who live in the country, but travel due to the nature of their work, entrepreneurs, businessmen, corporatists. I can make a comparison directly and from discussions with their colleagues who live abroad, regarding the level of safety on the streets and, in general, the level of safety. And I’m just reporting the conclusions to you all. Romania is one of the safest countries in the European Union at the moment and this is also due to the Romanian Police, the Border Police and the Gendarmerie, and the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations when a misfortune happens,” said Cătălin Predoiu, on Wednesday, in a press conference.

He stated that he is the first to put his finger on a wound in the institution he leads and explained that he does not do so in bad faith, but added that we must recognize that we have public safety at a better level than in Europe.
“Please believe that I am the first to put a finger on a wound, because that is my role. And I hope to be understood when I do it, I don’t do it in bad faith. Now I am directly addressing the apparatus, the ministry, the structures, the weapons and the unions. I don’t do it maliciously, I don’t do it to get an image, I do it constructively. I’m the first to put my finger on a wound when I see one. And I already have witnesses who can confirm this. They also do it in offices, not only in front of the cameras. But at the same time, I think it is just and fair to recognize the fact that we have a product, which is called public safety, at a more than satisfactory level compared to what is happening in Europe”, the Minister of the Interior said.

He added that Romanian businessmen do not have bodyguards as happens with those in Europe.
“Romanian businessmen do not pay for three lines of guards 24/7 to be protected, as others from other European countries do. And this is what the head of the Chamber of Commerce told me. Direct. I make no secret of it. I was recently invited to an event, I couldn’t attend, because I had a professional obligation with the ministry, but while discussing the gentleman said to me ‘I’m sorry you’re not coming, because I’d like to say this publicly. We travel, we walk, we have contacts all over the world, including Europe. We feel safe here, in Romania. We have colleagues from trades, professions, professional and commercial activities, who come to meetings with two or three people left, right, whom they pay”, Cătălin Predoiu said.

The context of the crime in Sibiu
Until now, it is known that, on the night of Sunday to Monday, around 2.30 am, three men with hoods broke into a building located on Moldoveanu Street in the city of Sibiu in order to steal goods.
The owner of the building, a 50-year-old man, a businessman, was physically assaulted by perpetrators who hit him several times on the head, torso and limbs and immobilized him by tying his hands and feet, according to the Siberian prosecutors.
Several valuable watches were stolen from the building.
The owner’s life partner, who was sleeping, and his 23-year-old daughter were also in the apartment. The latter was roughed up by the attackers and threatened with a gun, asking her to show where the money is.
The 50-year-old businessman was found in critical condition and was hospitalized in serious condition at the Sibiu County Emergency Clinical Hospital, where he died on Tuesday evening.
After the man’s death, the prosecutors will also change the legal classification of the act.
