When “Nothing New in the West” won four Oscars in March, quite a few people in the industry probably saw it as a turning point, after all, Netflix is behind the third film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s novel of the same name. But it is also clear that not all Netflix films stand out in this way – which is also due to the fact that the streaming service has had a lot of sub-par material produced in recent years.
Responsible for this is Scott Stuber, who in his role as film director focused primarily on quantity and less on class. In 2020 he even announced that Netflix should release a new film every week. It is precisely this strategy that should now change, as Stuber told the US industry service “Variety”.. Accordingly, Netflix wants to offer fewer, but also better films from now on. According to the report, only around 25 to 30 new films will be released this way every year.
“Right now we’re not trying to release a precise number of films. It’s more about making works that we believe in,” Stuber told Variety. “Let’s put together a film slate we can get behind.” For him it’s about the best version of a romantic comedy, a thriller or a drama.
Scott Stuber also explains the fact that Netflix has commissioned so many films so far with the competition that the streaming service tried to defend itself against as a comparatively young player on the market. “We were building a new studio. We had only been there a few years and were dealing with 100-year-old companies,” he said. “So you have to ask yourself: What is your business model? And for a while it was just about making sure we had enough. We needed volume.”
