Exciting Polish Cup Match: Polonia Bytom vs. Arka Gdynia 1/16 Final – VAR Drama and Overtime Win

The match between Polonia Bytom and Arka Gdynia in the 1/16 final of the Polish Cup provided a lot of excitement. At the end of the first half, the first league team lost a player, and after a while they could have taken the lead – only a great intervention by the goalkeeper saved him. Then the Bytom team led to a draw anyway, and in the end they scored another goal that could have given them promotion – everything was changed by the intervention of VAR. Arka recovered only in overtime and won 3-1.

Wednesday’s match of the 1/16 final of the Polish Cup between Polonia Bytom (II league) and Arka Gdynia (I league) was the only one played that day in which a team from the top league did not take part. Despite this, both teams created a very exciting spectacle.

Arka Gdynia had problems in the match against Polonia Bytom. VAR saved her

In the 42nd minute, Gdynia took the lead after Przemysław Stolec’s goal. They could have lost it even before the break, because the opponents received a penalty kick – while standing on the goal line, Sebastian Milewski played the ball with his hand and was sent off. Dawid Wolny approached the ball placed on the 11th meter, but his shot was saved by Martin Chudy and Arka still had the advantage.

However, a few minutes after the break, Polonia led to a draw thanks to Patryk Stefański’s goal, which finished off a nice team effort. Just before the end, it seemed that the second league team would make a surprise and eliminate their higher-ranked rival – Krzysztof Ropski scored the goal, but after video verification, the referees found it was offside and the score was still 1-1. This result remained until the end of regular time and overtime was needed.

Arka, playing weakly, started this part of the match brilliantly. Shortly after the game resumed from the inside, Kasjan Lipkowski made it 2-1, taking advantage of Olaf Kobacki’s pass. Just before the end of the first part of overtime, he increased the score to 3:1 and Gdynia was very close to advancing. During the last quarter of an hour, the result did not change and the first league team was happy to advance to the 1/8 finals.
