The UN undersecretary for famine prevention, Reena Ghelani, pleaded on Tuesday, November 7, for more humanitarian aid for the families of the displaced, settled around Goma (North Kivu).
On mission in the east of the DRC, this senior United Nations official made this plea during his visit to the Rusayo 2 displaced persons camp, located west of Goma.
Here, she saw the difficult conditions in which thousands of displaced people live.
And for almost an hour, she spoke directly with the representatives of the displaced people of this site.
Reena Ghelani says she is asking for more funds to alleviate the suffering of these people:
“We urgently need our donors to give us money for the short term, so that we can have help and communities can be self-reliant, even in a situation of displacement. »
She relayed the desire of these displaced people to see peace restored in their living environments in order to return there.
So, even in the immediate term, Reena Ghelani proposed that the humanitarian community provide aid to these people, while waiting for peace so that they can return home.
The latest integrated analyzes of food security in the DRC indicate that more than 25 million Congolese will find themselves in a situation of acute food crisis in areas affected by armed conflicts.
And so far, the DRC’s humanitarian response plan in 2023 has only been 36% funded, humanitarian workers deplore.
