Colorado Funeral Home Owner Arrested for Careless Handling of Human Remains and Money Laundering

The owner of a funeral home where dozens of bodies in an advanced state of decomposition were found last month has been arrested. His wife was also taken by the police on Monday. The incident took place in the US state of Colorado.

The couple is suspected of, among other things, careless handling of human remains, theft, forgery and money laundering.

The man owns a funeral home in a small town about 100 miles from the capital Denver. Local authorities received complaints in early October about a “repulsive odor” near the center.

During their investigation, the police and the FBI found not only a dilapidated business building, but also the remains of 115 people. It took police almost two weeks to remove all the bodies. Moreover, it turned out that not 115 but 189 deceased persons had been stored. All remains were in an advanced state of decomposition. The owner admitted at the time that there were “problems” with his funeral home. The local sheriff spoke of “terrible conditions” in the building.

The funeral home had been in operation since 2017 and advertised so-called green funerals. The embalming of a body is skipped. This also means that the remains remain ‘good’ for less time. The funeral home has been experiencing financial problems for some time.
