Today, the 8th (Wednesday), is the “first winter” of the 24 solar terms. Although it’s winter according to the calendar, temperatures west of the Kanto region reach a maximum of around 22 degrees Celsius, making it comfortable and sunny with just a shirt on during the day. Tomorrow, the 9th (Thursday), it will be sunny throughout the country during the day, and in western Japan such as Fukuoka, there are some summer days where the maximum temperature is over 25 degrees Celsius, but this weekend the temperature is likely to plummet.

In Sendai, the temperature is expected to be 18℃, about 2℃ higher than normal, and in Sapporo, the temperature is expected to be 15℃, similar to late October.

Mornings will get even colder next week, with temperatures dropping to 7℃ on the 14th (Tuesday). In Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka, the minimum temperature is expected to drop to around 7℃ next week.

Generally speaking, when the temperature drops below 10℃, it is said to be cold enough to require heating. The season will move forward from this weekend, so be sure to prepare for winter, including heating equipment.
