Next week will be a month since Intel released its 14th generation Core processors, Raptor Lake-refresh. However, this event does not seem to have had a significant impact. Of the six major Western vendors, the AMD product remains at the top of the list in five cases, with the only exception being the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
Newegg
In the NewEgg ranking, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is followed by four Intel models (with the exception of one, they are cheaper than the mentioned Ryzen). Not a single one of the ten best-sellers is part of the new Core 14000 series.
Amazon
Ryzen 7 7800X3D also leads Amazon sales, but it is followed by AMD sale models (Ryzen 5000 series). The representative of the fourteenth generation appeared in the 9th place. However, it is a success, I will allow myself a spoiler in the form of information that the Core i9-14900K made it to the “top 10” at only two sellers.
Mindfactory via TechEpiphany
The German Mindfactory, which is the most transparent of all sellers, as it also publishes the number of processors sold, reports that current sales of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D are higher than the sum of all Intel 14th generation processors sold. In fact, the sales of the 14th generation manage to surpass even the older Ryzen 7 5800X3D, and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D alone on Mindfactory rolls the sales of all Intel processors together, not only the 14th generation.
B&H
The situation looks a little different at B&H. Ryzen 7 7800X3D rested in second place, as it was overtaken by the cheaper Ryzen 5 7600X, on which the seller gives another $62 discount. Which is probably the reason for its current popularity.
Bestbuy
At first glance, it might seem that Intel can congratulate itself, because at BestBuy the Core i9-13900K reached the first place in the ranking. However, that would be a mistake. The tiny gray inscription “sponsored” means that it is not the first place in the ranking, but an advertising (paid) position. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is once again the best seller.
Microcenter
Only on Microcenter did the Intel processor reach first place, it is the Core i7-13700K. The reason is similar to the case of the Ryzen 5 7600X at B&H: the Core i7-13700K is offered in a sale where the customer who buys the processor receives a discount on the bundle with the board and memory. In addition, Microcenter is the only listed seller that does not ship most processors (all except Threadrippers) – it only sells them in brick-and-mortar stores.
The Core 14000 did not make the top five for any of the six named vendors, despite different strategies and actions. With the exception of Mindfactory, Intel’s best-selling processor remains a representative from the 13th or 12th generation.
From a retail point of view, the release of the 14th generation appears to be unnecessary, as it did not fundamentally improve sales and rather hurt the brand by combining a huge increase in consumption with a low shift in performance. The reason for the release will therefore be rather to maintain a higher average selling price (margins were already falling on the 13th generation and Intel needs to maintain income in a difficult economic situation) in combination with an effort to offer OEMs marketing charges so that their new line of kits for the pre-Christmas season and the year 2024 could boast of a new generation of processors.
