The Fight Against the `Profitable University’ Law: Cross-University Network Holds Press Conference in Tokyo

A bill to revise the National University Corporation Law, which would require large national university corporations to establish collegial bodies, would destroy university autonomy, and a group of university professors and lawyers opposed the bill, calling for the abolition of the “University that Makes Money” law. The Cross-University Network held a press conference in Tokyo on the 7th.

The proposed revision would require large national university corporations, such as the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, to establish an “management policy committee” to decide on six-year medium-term plans and budgets. The council is made up of three or more members, including external experts, and the president, and can request the president to improve management. The government approved the revised bill at a Cabinet meeting on the 31st of last month, and is aiming for its early enactment.

At the press conference, Professor Sayaka Oki of the University of Tokyo pointed out, “Creative research requires a bottom-up approach, but if we proceed top-down, we will fall behind. Military research may also be given a boost.” Professor Toshihiko Yoneda of Ochanomizu University criticized the move, saying, “University governance is being imposed from outside. This is not a democratic country.”The same net“change.org” websiteAn online signature is being held.
