Municipalities Urge Minister to Take Action Against Upgraded E-Bikes for Road Safety

07 Nov 2023 at 23:45

Dozens of municipalities want outgoing Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Mark Harbers to quickly take measures against upgraded e-bikes. According to the municipalities, the variant with fat tires in particular, the so-called fat bike, causes a lot of inconvenience.

“Road safety cannot wait any longer,” they write in a letter.

According to the municipalities, the upgraded e-bikes are a danger on the cycle path. According to the signatories, this not only concerns young people on upgraded e-bikes, but also parents on e-cargo bikes and young adults and the elderly on fast e-bikes.

The municipalities are asking Harbers for a national ban on the sale of sets to boost bicycles so that they can go faster. The municipalities also want a minimum age for using e-bikes. “We call on you to intervene and come up with a concrete package of short-term measures.”

The letter is an initiative of Haarlem and Amsterdam and has now been signed by 43 municipalities.
