Nuno Espírito Santo Steps Down as Al Ittihad Coach After Recent Defeat in Asian Champions League

Nuno Espírito Santo stopped being coach of Al Ittihad, the reigning champion of Saudi Arabia, this Tuesday. The Portuguese could not resist another defeat, this time in the Asian Champions League, on Monday, against the Iraqis of Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, 2-0, in the fourth round of Group C.

The Jeddah club revealed on social media that the decision was made after “an exhaustive technical assessment” of the team’s recent past and that assistant coach Hassan Khalifa would take interim command.

Champion in 2022/23, Al Ittihad is far from the fight to revalidate the title. With 12 rounds played, Al Ittihad, where Portuguese striker Jota plays, occupies sixth place, already 11 points behind leader Al Hilal, who is coached by Jorge Jesus and also has Rúben Neves in its ranks.

Furthermore, Al Ittihad is through to the quarter-finals of the King’s Cup and remains at the top of Group D of the Asian Champions League.
