Twice a month, students of the Jazz Department of the Jāzeps Mediņš Riga Music High School have the opportunity to gain concert experience and perform in front of the public at the “Atmoda” cultural house.
JMRMV guitar teacher Elvijs Graftsov and the organizer of the event reveals: “The school has about six ensembles, the ensembles are combined, and everyone performs, because this concert experience is very important. Musicians of my generation, we all grew up playing in clubs, and so as they are already in high school – the jazz and popular music department in “medin” – then they have a performance every month.”
As the teacher of saxophone playing and leader of the 2nd year jazz ensemble Oskars Petrauskas admits, the most important thing for a young musician, starting to get used to the public like this, is inspiration: “Young people really need inspiration, a source of inspiration, some special artists, under the influence of which they have chosen the path of music. After that, the next thing is a very good school, a very good teacher, to whom he comes to learn the specific instrument, and certainly parallel to that is a very necessary stage, where he can get real musical experience.”
JMRMV double bass teacher Pēteris Liepiņš notes: “As the leader of the first-year ensemble, I allow quite a lot of freedom, of course there are some frameworks, there is a program, but we look at what everyone can do, what they have previously rehearsed, we try to put everything together.”
The 1st-year students of the Jāzeps Mediņas Riga Music High School note that the mood is important in concerts, including how the audience feels it, which also charges the musicians. “The more support from the audience, the more motivation and energy to play,” says JMRMV student Nicoletta Shemendyuk. Her schoolmate Daniela Kruste adds: “Playing is probably the most difficult, when you have to get along with each other’s sound and adapt.”
Meanwhile, visitors are excited. “Great! It’s such a joy to see young people who are involved in music, who are happy to bring joy to others. I’m very proud of my sister, who is the drummer, and the whole band, I also really like how the teacher encourages and keeps everyone together , sounded very high level.”
