MediaTek Dimensity 9300 Processor: Performance, Efficiency, and Features

Although mobile processors are primarily valued for economy, the new processor MediaTek Dimensity 9300 bet everything on performance. It will be really interesting to see what performance it will achieve, and above all, at what consumption. While most mobile processors have one extra powerful, several powerful and several energy-saving cores, the Dimensity 9300 turns everything upside down and has no energy-saving cores (Cortex-A5xx) at all. Neither. Their role here is taken over by 4 powerful Cortex-A720 cores, however, in a way, they will be economical cores, as they have a frequency of 2.0 GHz, i.e. significantly less than what is usual for the 7xx series, which usually move close to the 3.0 GHz limit. In other words, the “thrifty” cores are here, only the Cortex-A7xx cores were used instead of the Cortex-A5xx series. So we can expect slightly higher performance, but also probably slightly higher consumption than if the A5xx series with the same clocks were used.

The powerful cores here are made up of four Cortex-X4 models, i.e. those that usually have the role of extra powerful ones. But here, too, we experience the same thing as with the economical ones. The number of cores is shifted by one degree, but not their frequency. So we have one extra powerful Cortex-X4 core with a frequency of 3.25 GHz (this is probably the only traditional core on the entire processor), and three powerful cores have a clock speed of 2.85 GHz. Only instead of the Cortex-A7xx series, there is a Cortex-X4. Although we have a 4+4+0 configuration (4 X, 4 A7xx and 0 A5xx) in terms of core series, in terms of frequencies there is actually a traditional 1+3+4 configuration that has been used for some time. The processor is manufactured using 4nm technology. According to MediaTek, it has 15% higher single-threaded performance, 40% higher multi-threaded performance, while being 33% more efficient in MT than the previous generation. The processor includes 18 MB L3 + SLC cache.

LPDDR5T-9600 memories are supported, and it is also possible to use UFS4 + MCQ storage. The processor is also equipped with an ARM Immortalis-G720 MC12 GPU with support for both H.264 and H.265/HEVC encoding, and also handles VP-9 and AV1 for decoding. It has 12 cores and 46% higher performance in ray-tracing. ISP Imagiq 990 can work with up to 320MPx camera, it is possible to record 8K30p or 4K60p video. It goes without saying that the MediaTek APU 790 AI unit for generative AI offers 8 times higher performance, 45% better efficiency and enables working with models with 33 billion parameters.

When it comes to data networks, the Dimensity 9300 handles 5G as Sub-6GHz (max. 7 Gbps) as well as mmWave. We have GPS location services (L1C+LC1A+L5), BeiDou, Glonass, Galileo, QZSS and NavIC. There is also support for Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) with a maximum speed of 6.5 Gbps and Bluetooth 5.4. The processor can work with displays with a resolution of 4K up to 120 Hz or WQHD up to 180 Hz.
