Comic artist Toon van Driel was appointed knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau on Tuesday. The artist is known for the long-running series FC Knudde.

The 78-year-old Van Driel was surprised with the news on Tuesday at the presentation of his biography Knudde. “I fell backwards,” Van Driel says ANP. The artist is “secretly proud” of the knighthood.

Football greats Louis van Gaal and Guus Hiddink, among others, supported the application for Van Driel’s appointment as a knight. The knighthood is awarded to persons who have made a special contribution to Dutch society.

Van Driel has been making comics for five decades FC Knudde, about the comic adventures of a bumbling football team. The exclamation “tick back”, with which FC Knudde’s last man Jaap constantly causes problems for his goalkeeper Dirk, has now become a national phenomenon.

Van Driel continued to design The Regulars, in which various animals find themselves in bizarre situations. He also made a comic strip about the comedian André van Duin for several years. In 1988, Van Driel received the Stripschap Prize, the highest Dutch award for comics artists, for his entire oeuvre.
