On Archangel’s Day, Bulgarians slaughter a sacrifice in honor of the patron saint of the dead. Usually a male animal is sacrificed – a ram or a ram, whose head and limbs are boiled whole and then burned with incense.

The women prepare and distribute among themselves special ritual breads, called “Rangelov” or “Lord’s bread”, “bogovitsa”, “Saint Petka”, “Rangelovo dish”. The festive table, be it family or village-wide, is consecrated by a representative of the church. The skin of the ritual sacrificial animal is always donated to the church.

The Saturday before Archangel’s Day is St. John’s Day. Red wine is poured over the graves of the deceased, grain is distributed, a candle is lit – to illuminate the path of the soul in the afterlife.
