The number of homeless people in Germany has increased sharply. According to homeless aid working group BAG W, the country had 447,000 homeless people on June 30 last year, almost double the number a year earlier.
At the time, the agency estimated that there were 268,000 people without a home.
According to BAG W, the large increase has several causes. For example, more refugees have come to Germany, especially from Ukraine. The number of homeless people with German nationality increased by ‘only’ 5 percent.
According to the working group, people mainly become homeless due to evictions, debts and divorces. People on low incomes would be hit hard by inflation and rising costs and would therefore be at risk of homelessness.
The figures include not only people known to shelters, but also people who temporarily sleep with friends and family or only sleep outside.
