In his first speech at the opening of Parliament since his ascension to the throne, British King Charles III expressed his welcome to President Yoon Seok-yeol and his wife, who will visit next month.
On the 7th (local time), Charles III said through the King’s Speech at Westminster Abbey, England, “I am looking forward to welcoming the President of Korea and First Lady Kim Kun-hee, who are making a state visit this month.”
The ‘King’s speech’ refers to the speech given by the King of England at the opening ceremony of Parliament every year in which he announces the government’s plan to enact major laws. During her time as Queen Elizabeth II, it was called the ‘Queen’s Speech’, and it was the first British royal ‘King’s Speech’ in 70 years.
Charles III began his speech today by paying tribute to his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, and then explained the 21 bills he plans to pass during the parliamentary session. Included are the ‘Holocaust Memorial Bill’, which provides the basis for building a Holocaust memorial near the National Assembly building, and the ‘Sentencing Bill’, which increases sentencing for heinous crimes.
President Yoon is scheduled to visit England at the invitation of Charles III this month to mark the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and England. The British royal family invited President Yoon and his wife as the first state guests since the coronation of Charles III last May.
