Hints that Israel may recruit 100,000 workers from India for reconstruction. Israel’s Builders Association has reportedly asked the government to allow companies in the country to recruit 100,000 workers from India as the work permits of 90,000 Palestinians have been revoked following Israel’s attacks by Hamas.
“We are in discussion with India regarding this matter. We are also waiting for the Israeli government’s decision to approve it. We expect to induct 50,000 to 100,000 workers from India. This will help bring the country’s construction sector back to normal,” Haim Feiglin, vice president of the Israel Builders Association, told Voice of America. However, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has yet to respond to this report.
Reports indicate that approximately 25 percent of Israeli construction workers are Palestinians. “We are now in a war zone. About 25 percent of our human resources in the region are Palestinian nationals. They are not allowed to work in Israel now”, Haim Feiglin said.

About 10 percent of the Palestinian workers employed in the construction sector in Israel are from Gaza. Gaza is currently a conflict zone. Reports also indicate that the rest are from the West Bank.
This past May, Israel signed an agreement with India that allowed 42,000 Indians to work in Israel. Construction sector and nursing sector were mainly involved in this. “Ministers of both countries have signed agreements allowing the recruitment of 42,000 Indian workers in the construction and nursing sectors,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The agreement was signed during Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen’s visit to India.
Last week, Israel returned thousands of Palestinian workers from the Gaza Strip. Workers who traveled through Israeli crossings on foot also revealed brutal treatment by Israeli authorities in detention centers. Wael al-Sajda, one of the workers, said they saw themselves as scapegoats. Al-Sajda was among 18,000 Palestinians from Gaza.
