Europe wants to further reduce air pollution with the Euro 7 standard. In particular, particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions should be further reduced. For passenger vehicles, this would mean 35 percent less nitrogen oxide compared to the current Euro 6 standard.
But for the first time, there are also regulations on reduced emissions of particulate matter and plastic particles released by tire wear and braking. All this should lead to better air quality and fewer premature deaths from air pollution. In Europe, 70,000 people die prematurely every year due to air pollution from road transport.
The new rules were originally scheduled to come into effect in 2025 for cars and two years later for buses and trucks. But due to lobbying from the car industry, that has been pushed back to July 2030 and July 2031 respectively. The amended, watered-down proposal has recently been approved by the European Parliament’s Environment Committee.
