Strategies and Efforts of Religious Leaders for Resolving Global Conflicts: Insights from the International Conference on Climate Change

Jakarta – The General Chairperson of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board at the International Conference of Religious Leaders for Climate Change explained strategies and efforts to resolve global conflicts through his speech. According to him, these problems must be a top priority on the agendas of world religious leaders.

“Protecting the environment, preserving the earth as the great home of mankind, is a great obligation that must be carried out and carried out by all religious communities. Religious leaders must pay great attention to this problem,” said the man who is familiarly called Gus Yahya at the Global Faith event. Summit on Climate Action which will take place from 6-7 November 2023 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Global Faith Summit on Climate Action, or the International Conference of Religious Leaders for Climate Change, was held in collaboration with the UAE Muslim Hukama Council in collaboration with the UN, as part of the series of events at COP28 UAE – United National Climate Change Conference.

In the event which gathered leading religious figures from all over the world, Gus Yahya delivered a speech in English with the theme “Spiritual Ecology: Fulfilling the Qur’anic Mandate to Serve as God’s Vicegerent on Earth (Khalîfah fî al-Ardh)”. The text of the speech was also translated into Arabic with the title “al-Îkûlûjiyâ al-Rûhiyyah: Istîfâ al-Amr al-Qur’ânî li al-Idhthilâ’ bi Daur al-Khalîfah fî al-Ardh”.

The existence of humans on earth, continued Gus Yahya, carries responsibility for the earth itself. Humans are given the opportunity and encouraged to live and develop, with all their needs met.

However, at the same time humans also have the mandate and responsibility to care for the universe. Simply put, the existence of humans on this earth bears responsibility in the name of God to protect and prosper it.

“Various kinds of damage that is happening on the face of the earth that is made by humans at this time, is a consequence of human neglect of their identity and the lack of carrying out and fulfilling the mandate of God as his vicegerent on the face of the earth. The neglect is a consequence of human actions to fight for control over natural resources, each other,” explained the PBNU Ketum in the written statement received detikWisdom on Tuesday (7/11/2023).

Gus Yahya said, the more humanity is divided and in conflict with each other, the more arbitrarily they are in exploiting the natural resources they have controlled. The dynamics of conflict and contradiction are the cause of creating various damages on earth.

Then, Gus Yahya explained that efforts to maintain the health of the earth and nature require two important things, namely harmony and distribution of natural resources.

The purpose of the first point is harmony in relations and struggles between human beings. Meanwhile, the distribution of natural resources prioritizes rahmah (compassion) and ‘adâlah (justice).

“This is absolutely necessary to eliminate mutual suspicion and hostility, so that it can then become a basis for building harmony in life between humans,” explained Gus Yahya.

In the midst of environmental problems, strategic choices to overcome and resolve them must also prioritize compassion and justice. Don’t just choose one strategy that could logically prevent further, more severe damage to the earth or repair existing damage. But at the same time it also harms one party.

Gus Yahya also emphasized that the strategy to be developed to resolve environmental problems must consider the humanitarian impacts comprehensively.

“When there is a party that may be harmed as a result of the choice of strategy taken, fair incentives and initiatives must be provided for that party, and workable and delivered strategies must also be provided to prepare and help the disadvantaged group, so that they can adapt, so that they remain his happiness is preserved,” he added.

Apart from Gus Yahya, several other important figures from the Islamic world also spoke, such as HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al-Nahyan (Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, UAE), HE Sheikh Muhammad al-Dhuwaini (Deputy Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Egypt), HV Sheikh Allahsukur Pasahzadeh (Caucasian Grand Mufti, Azerbaijan), Dr. Salim bin Muhammad al-Malik (General Director of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ISESCO, KSA), Shaykh Abdullah bin Ahmad al-Khalifa (Director of the King Hamad Global Center for Peaceful Coexistence, Bahrain), Shaykh Talgat Tadzhuddin (Head of the Council Islamic College, Russia), Dr. Syafiq Mughni (Muhammadiyah Organization, Indonesia) and others.
