Israel must provide security in the Gaza Strip for an “indefinite period” after the end of hostilities. This opinion expressed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an interview with the American television channel ABC News.
ABC News journalist David Muir asked Netanyahu who should govern the Gaza Strip after the war ends. According to the Israeli prime minister, these should be those “who do not want to continue on the path of Hamas.”
“I think that Israel will, for an indefinite period, bear overall responsibility for security [в регионе]because we’ve seen what happens when we don’t. When we are not responsible for security, all we have is a surge in Hamas terror on a scale we could never have imagined,” Netanyahu said.
Journalists asked US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby whether Washington supports Netanyahu’s position on the future of the sector. Kirby replied that the discussion about this is ongoing and a final decision has not yet been made. “We support that Hamas can no longer control Gaza,” Kirby added.
In an interview with ABC News, Netanyahu also rejected the idea of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip until all hostages taken by Hamas are released. At the same time, he allowed the announcement of “tactical pauses” – “an hour here, an hour there.” The prime minister noted that Israel has already announced them to allow humanitarian supplies to pass through or to remove people. In his opinion, a general ceasefire would prevent Israeli efforts to free the hostages.
In mid-October, US President Joe Biden said that the Hamas movement must be completely destroyed. At the same time, he noted that Israel’s occupation of the Gaza Strip would be a big mistake.
According to Bloomberg, the United States and Israel are discussing the possibility of creating an interim government in the Gaza Strip after Hamas is ousted from this territory. The publication emphasized that the creation of an interim government would require support from Arab states throughout the region, which is not guaranteed.
