Airbnb Accused by Milan Prosecutor’s Office of Tax Evasion on Italian Rental Income

Milan’s public prosecutor’s office accused Airbnb on Monday of failing to collect taxes on rental income that owners received between 2017 and 2021. That money must now be transferred to the Italian tax authorities, police said.

Italian law requires the American platform to collect a 21 percent tax on short-term rentals. Airbnb declined to comment on the news.

The Italian government announced at the end of October that it wanted to combat the rental of properties for a short period and on which no taxes are paid. Rome also announced that it will increase the tax for owners who rent out more than one apartment on platforms such as Airbnb.
