Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would consider “small tactical pauses” in fighting in Gaza to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid or allow the release of hostages held by Hamas militants, Reuters reports.

However, the Israeli leader reiterated that his country rejects the possibility of a ceasefire without the release of all people held captive in the Hamas-run Palestinian enclave.

Netanyahu made the comments in an interview with American television, during which he was asked who should rule Gaza after the end of the conflict.

“I think that Israel for an indefinite period of time will have overall responsibility for security, because we have seen what happens when we don’t have that responsibility for security,” Netanyahu told ABC News.

Israel launched an air and ground offensive against Hamas after the militant group carried out a deadly gun attack in southern Israel last month that killed 1,400 people and took another 240 hostage. According to the enclave’s health authorities, at least 10,000 people have died in the Israeli bombardment of Gaza.

Both Israel and Hamas have rejected growing international calls for a ceasefire, according to Reuters. Israel says Hamas must first release the hostages, and Hamas says it will not release them or stop while Gaza is under attack.

Asked if he was ready for a humanitarian pause in Gaza, Netanyahu said: “There will be no ceasefire, there will be no general ceasefire in Gaza, unless our hostages are released.”

He added: “As for the little tactical pauses – an hour here, an hour there – we’ve done them before. I guess we’ll check the circumstances to allow goods, humanitarian goods, to come in or for our hostages , individual hostages, to leave”.
