Kino Ideal announces when it will cease operations
The new building plans on Aarauer Casinostrasse have been known for a long time: the Ideal cinema is making way for a new building. Now it’s clear when. And management suggests that there could also be changes to the second cinema, “Schloss”.

Rolf Portmann will close his Ideal cinema at the end of June 2025. Kino Aarau AG announced this in a press release. “After decades of commitment to film art and making unforgettable cinematic moments possible, the management of Kino Aarau AG has decided to take this step,” it says. The first multiplex cinema in Aarau was an important part of the cultural landscape in the Aarau region.
The closure at the end of June 2025 is due to the fact that the starting signal for the new building by Senda Immobilien AG should be given in the summer of 2025. The building application was made public in the summer, but there was an objection and approval could not yet be granted.
31 apartments are planned where the cinema is today: 17 of them with 2.5 rooms, 8 with 1.5, the rest with 3.5 to 4.5 rooms. The development should be car-free. A retail space is planned on the ground floor facing Casinostrasse, offices at the back of the building and a café in between.
“As we say goodbye to this era, we would like to emphasize that the Ideal cinema will continue to offer a diverse and exciting film program until the last day in June 2025,” the statement continues. Kino Aarau AG will provide information about the future of the Schloss cinema (on Schlossplatz) in due course, it is said. When asked, the deputy managing director emphasized: “A closure is not up for discussion.”
