Ethan Hawke’s Novel “A Bright Ray of Darkness” Explores His Career’s Darkest Episode

Actor and writer Ethan Hawke, four-time Oscar nominee and eternal protagonist of works such as the trilogy Before…, lived the darkest episode of his career 20 years ago, when the tabloids made it public that he had cheated on his then wife, actress Uma Thurman. That episode, spread by the whirlwind of paparazzi and tabloid headlines and which almost destroyed his career, is the basis on which the performer of films like Training Day o Gattaca wrote his third novel, A bright ray of darknesspublished in 2021.

A work that has been translated and published in Spanish by the Córdoba publishing house Berenice (Almuzara), and that goes on sale this week. In A bright ray of darkness, Hawke tells the story of a young film actor who makes his Broadway debut in a Shakespeare play just as his marriage falls apart in the public eye.

“A vigorous meditation on fame and celebrity, and the redemptive and healing power of art; a portrait of the ravages of disappointment and divorce; a novel steeped in rage and sex, longing and despair, and a passionate love letter to the world of theater. A bright ray of darkness shows the enormous talent of Ethan Hawke as a novelist,” says the publisher about a novel that the interpreter himself admits took 20 years to write and that was defined by the Washington Post as “a deeply hopeful story about the possibility of rising above the own narcissism.”

Although he is best known worldwide for his role as an actor, Ethan Hawke has directed two feature films, three off-Broadway plays and several documentaries, and has written the novels The Hottest State (1996) y Ash Wednesday (2002). As a performer, his fame came in 1989 for playing Todd Anderson in the film Dead poets societyand during the nineties he was one of the most relevant actors of the young star system of Hollywood, especially when he chained together two generational successes such as Reality Bites y Before dawnin the middle of that decade.

This last film, signed by Richard Linklater, had two sequels in which Hawke served as screenwriter and for which he was nominated for an Oscar twice. The other two nominations he has received were as a performer for Training Day y Boyhood. Other of his most acclaimed films are Gattaca, Before the devil knows you’re dead o First reformed. One of the last has been Strange way of life, a medium-length film directed by Pedro Almodóvar and performed alongside Pedro Pascal.
