Poland’s Iga Świątek Defeats Aryna Sabalenka to Reach Final of WTA Tournament

Cancún (Mexico) (AFP) – Poland’s Iga Szwiłtek, ranked second in the world, defeated Belarusian No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to reach the final of the final WTA women’s tennis tournament, which will be held in Cancun, Mexico, where she will face American Jessica Pegula.

By defeating the Australian Open champion, Švyontek prevented her counterpart Sabalenka from achieving the victory that would have guaranteed her the top spot in the world rankings by the end of the year.

The French Open champion, Cheviontek, is also able to seize the top spot in the rankings for the second year in a row if she defeats Pegula in the final match on Monday.

“I feel that there is still a long way to go because I feel that tomorrow’s match will be the most difficult,” Shevuntek said.

She continued, “We can talk about it tomorrow after the match. I will continue doing what I have been doing.”

Sabalenka stripped Świentec of the top spot in the rankings two months ago, and she will only keep it in one case, which is if Pegula wins the final.

Pegula defeated her compatriot Coco Gauff 6-2 and 6-1 within an hour on Saturday in the other match of the semi-finals, achieving her ninth victory in a row.

Shevuntek leads 5-3 in direct confrontations with Pegula, but the latter won two of the three confrontations that brought them together this year, in the United Cup and then in the semi-finals of the Montreal tournament last August, before Shevuntek defeated her in the final of the Doha tournament.

“I can’t really tell you the keys to the game. I’ll work on that,” Sheviontek said.

The final match was postponed to Monday due to the rain, which caused complete chaos in the schedule of matches for the week on the open courts in Cancun, including stopping the match between Šivuntek and Sabalenka after starting with three games on Saturday evening.

Światk was ahead 2-1 on her serve when play resumed on Sunday, and the Polish woman was able to break her opponent’s serve once in the first set.

Then the Polish player broke her opponent’s serve in the second set and repeated the action again to advance 5-2, before deciding the match and advancing to the final.
