Rats Take the Spotlight: New York’s Surprising Tourist Attraction

The Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park and… rats. New York certainly has no shortage of tourist attractions, but it’s as if rats, whose population has increased exponentially with the Covid-19 pandemic, have become the new “city mascot”, relate le New York Post.

Tourist guides now offer tours dedicated to rodents and tourists flock there, underlines the tabloid. Kenny Bollwerk, for example, offers free tours and documents, live on his TikTok account, the most infested places in the city. His live videos sometimes attract up to 10,000 viewers at a time, notes the New York Post.

The “new celebrities” in town

Luke Miller, the founder of Real New York Tours, has added stops to his guided tours, including a stop at Columbus Park, near the Chinatown district, so rat lovers can observe their favorite animal. “With all the articles that the press devotes to them, rats are a bit like the new celebrities in town”, he emphasizes.

The Democratic mayor of New York, Eric Adams, may have taken drastic measures and appointed last April an anti-rat coordinator, Kathleen Corradi, who promised zero tolerance towards these unwanted guests, this particular tourism still seems to have good days ahead of him. As evidenced in the columns of New York PostAaron Lidwell and his wife Christine, two tourists from Altoona, Pennsylvania, to visit the Big Apple: “In New York, this is definitely something not to be missed!”
