KIEV, KOMPAS.TV – The Ukrainian President’s Office on Saturday (4/11/2023) strongly criticized Ukraine’s top military commander for publicly declaring the war with Russia was at a stalemate, saying the general’s comments would only aid Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

This is a striking public rebuke and shows the divisions within the military and civilian leadership at a difficult time for Ukraine.

Speaking on national television, Ihor Zhovkva, deputy head of the president’s office, said General Valery Zaluzhny’s remarks would only “make the (Russian) aggressor’s job easier,” adding the comments caused “panic” among Ukraine’s Western allies.

Meanwhile, Zelensky denied Zalushny’s statements about the fighting. “Time has passed, people are tired, regardless of their status, and this is understandable,” Zelensky said on Saturday. “But this is not a deadlock, I want to emphasize this once again.”

The public rebuke of General Zaluzhny came a day after the President’s Office replaced one of his deputies, the head of special forces, who after the dismissal said he was shocked by the dismissal, as reported by New York TimesSunday, (5/11/2023).

It is not clear whether General Zaluzhny, the overall commander of Ukrainian forces, knew in advance about the dismissal of the Ukrainian special forces commander.

The emerging rift between the military chief and the President comes as Ukraine is struggling in its war effort.

Ukraine’s military operations failed to produce any progress, while doubts about Ukraine’s assistance increased in Europe and among Republicans in the United States.

The Ukrainian leader also worries that Western allies’ attention is turning to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, away from their war with Russia.
