European Commission Condemns Escalating Anti-Semitism Amid Middle East Conflict

The European Commission condemns the “abhorrent acts” associated with rising anti-Semitism as conflict in the Middle East worsens. The statement was published on November 5 on the EC website.

“The surge in anti-Semitic incidents across Europe has reached extraordinary levels over the past few days, reminiscent of some of the darkest times in history. European Jews today again live in fear,” the statement said.

They recalled how Molotov cocktails were thrown at a synagogue in Berlin, Stars of David were painted on residential buildings in France, there were attacks on Jewish shops and synagogues in Spain, and thousands of demonstrators took to the streets with anti-Semitic slogans.

The EU says it supports Jewish communities. They noted that no one should live in fear of discrimination or violence because of their religion or their identity. The European Union wants to fight back against the rise of anti-Semitism and hatred of Muslims. To do this, they intend to use “powerful response tools,” such as the criminalization of public incitement to hatred and violence. In addition, the EU intends to strengthen security measures and tighten legislation in the field of monitoring online platforms so that they “quickly and effectively respond to anti-Semitic or anti-Muslim content on the Internet.”
