Police detained protesters outside the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday, tbsnews.net reported.
Waving blue and white Israeli flags and chanting “Jail now!”, hundreds of people broke through police barriers around Netanyahu’s Jerusalem residence.
The protest, which coincided with a poll showing more than three-quarters of Israelis think Netanyahu should resign, underscored growing public anger against local political leaders.
Netanyahu has so far not taken personal responsibility for the failures that allowed the surprise attack, in which hundreds of Hamas gunmen swept into southern Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people and taking at least 240 hostages.
Initial shock gave way to public anger, with many of the families of hostages held in Gaza sharply criticizing the government’s response and calling for their relatives to be returned home.
In Tel Aviv, thousands demonstrated, waving flags and holding pictures of some of the captives in Gaza and placards with slogans such as “Free the hostages now at all costs,” as crowds chanted “Bring them home now.”
Ofri Bibas-Levi, whose brother, along with her four-year-old son Ariel and 10-month-old son Kfir, were taken hostage by Hamas, told Reuters she had come to show support for her family.
“We don’t know where they are, we don’t know what condition they are in.” I don’t know if Kfir gets food, I don’t know if Ariel gets enough food. He’s a very small baby,” Bibas-Levy said.
After the attack, Israel launched an intense air and ground offensive in Gaza, killing more than 9,000 people, health officials in the Hamas-ruled area say, and turning large areas of the enclave into rubble.
Even before the war, Netanyahu was a controversial figure, battling corruption charges he denies and pushing a plan to curb the powers of the judiciary that brought hundreds of thousands to the streets in protest.
On Saturday, a poll for Israel’s Channel 13 television found that 76 percent of Israelis thought Netanyahu, now serving a record sixth term as prime minister, should resign, and 64 percent said the country should hold elections immediately after the war .
When asked who was most to blame for the attack, 44 percent of Israelis blamed Netanyahu, while 33 percent blamed the chief of military staff and just 5 percent the defense minister.
