Top Games to Play Before Death: From Witcher 3 to Dark Souls

Life is too short to sit through bad games. And that there are… Since we have a period shortly after Halloween and our souls, we had to ask one question: what games should a person play before death?

Today’s episode is sponsored by CZC.CZ, thank you.

WITCHCRAFT 3

We’ll admit straight away that our list will be more mainstream. But at the same time, such games are among those that the largest percentage of players will enjoy. This is proven by the first of the titles in our selection – The Witcher 3. If any game really deserves a place in this ranking, then it is definitely it. The previous two parts were already great, but only with the third CD Projekt Red studio did something absolutely amazing.

For all gamers who love the fantasy genre, a wonderfully told story, but also great gameplay, this is a game that deserves a little love from each of them. Or a lot of love, because this is a very long, epic RPG that will last you dozens and dozens and dozens of hours. It seems almost impossible that it will be more than 8 years since the original release. But if you haven’t had the honor with Geralt yet, this should definitely be at the top of your bucket list.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2

Of course, if fantasy isn’t your cup of coffee and you’d rather go for something more historical, there’s nothing wrong. For lovers of story games and primarily westerns, we have another must-play title.

At Rockstar, they proved that their games often belong not only to the video game hall of fame, but also to the hearts of many game fans. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a title for which a real guy should take two weeks off from work once and go to the wild west in this action western. No really. This game has everything you could wish for. Amazing story, beautiful graphics and atmosphere of the wild west, but most importantly great gameplay. In addition, if you hesitated for a long time, fan Czech has been available on the PC for some time, so there is no excuse for English anymore.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an intentionally slower title that will keep you going for a long time. But like few others, they allow you to experience a real period of human history in a slightly more raw way.

PORTAL A HALF-LIFE

But let’s move from the wild west and fantasy to something more science fiction with a touch of dystopia. Studio Valve has already proven to us several times that its titles are not only amazing, but that everyone who has ever sat down at a computer should at least play a game from their workshop. Except maybe the card Artifact…

But the situation is different when looking at their favorite games. But instead of multiplayer classics in the form of Counter-Strike, DOTY or Team Fortress 2, we are more interested in single-player legends from them. So we have to put both the Half-Life series and Portal in one place. All the parts, just a complete set.

The first Half-Life in its time made a hole in the world with its approach to storytelling in an otherwise at first glance – in quotes – “dull” shooter. A deep story with an amazing world and a great level design and the atmosphere of increasingly claustrophobic laboratories excited many a player. Although we would recommend playing the first part in its original form, we know that after such a period of time, no one will want to. An amazing fan-made remake, but directly blessed by the studio Valve, with the name Black Mesa will do.

But every good player should definitely have finished the second part of the series and its episodes. Although it is a title that is almost 20 years old, it still holds up incredibly both graphically and in terms of gameplay. It is a video game classic and an absolute legend that everyone should try at least once.

As well as the second series, which takes place in the world of Half-Life. A very popular logical Portal to this day. Although the first part is amazing and you should definitely not skip it, it is mainly a concept of a couple of hours rather than a really big game. That was only the second part, which no one should miss. Not only is it an amazing gaming experience with a well-told story, but the game often forces you to think completely differently and try different craziness with its amazing logic puzzles.

And what do you know, maybe thanks to this you will find out that there is something in you… or that the cake is a lie.

THE LAST OF US

Another of the big and well-known titles that you should definitely not miss is the first part of The Last of Us. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that shows you a post-apocalyptic world on the brink of collapse. A world where people try to survive in a world infested with a disease that turns people into mindless fungal “zombies”.

Not only is it a game with great gameplay and amazing graphics, but above all, it is still one of the best-told stories of today. Along with Joel and Ellie, you will travel across the United States to not only form an amazing bond with each other, but also to find the last hope for humanity. But are you willing to pay the heavy price?

WORLD OF WARCRAFT

However, if there is a game that you would seriously not expect on this list, it would probably be the almost 20-year-old World of Warcraft. Although this MMORPG from Blizzard has seen better days and its fame is no longer what it once was, it is still a game that probably everyone should try in their lifetime. And why? Not because of the amazing story, or because of the huge world that the developers put so much love into, but because of the people… WoWko has always been about the community that was the core of the game. Sure, you can venture into Azeroth alone, but that’s not what this experience is about.

WoWko is about friends that you go on a dungeon expedition with for huge raids. Thanks to World of Warcraft, you can find lifelong friends, learn to work together and who knows, maybe even a life partner, why not? It has already happened several times.

DARK SOULS

And just as it is almost a duty to try to play WoWko in a large open world, so every serious gamer should try Dark Souls at least once in his life. Not only is it a game with great level design and amazing, in many ways iconic gameplay, but it’s also a game that will die a lot. So what is it good for? You will learn not to underestimate the power of failure. You learn a lot from failure, and if Dark Souls teaches you anything, it’s to believe in yourself, overcome obstacles, and learn from your mistakes. A little strategy won’t hurt either.

So if you’ve never played any of the solo games before, you really should give it a try. You might find that you don’t enjoy it and you don’t have the patience. But who knows, you might find that constantly outdoing yourself is more fun than you think.

MAFIA

We should not forget about the legendary Czech game in the form of Mafia. If only because every Czech player should know the story of Tom Angel and his friends at least once. On a global scale, it is not a groundbreaking game, even if it was slightly broken with a good and a few years old remake, but for us Czechs and Slovaks, Mafia is something that no one should pass over and ignore.

It doesn’t matter if you like the mafia theme or not. This game carries many interesting ideas and deeper meanings. The Mafia entered our hearts also thanks to the legendary Czech dubbing, which is still absolutely divine even after many years. It doesn’t matter if you’re reaching for the 2002 classic or the remake, one thing’s for sure: you shouldn’t miss it either way.

BEFORE YOUR EYES

But if you are looking for something smaller and more interesting, the game Before Your Eyes will paradoxically open your eyes. This is a small indie title that, despite its size, offers a huge emotional experience.

In Before Your Eyes, you find yourself on a posthumous voyage to the judgment of your soul, having to relive your entire life and its events. However, the game makes perfect use of your webcam. If you blink, you move forward in time. This is an amazing gaming experience that shows you how precious some of our moments can be and you have to decide which moments to focus on and which moments to let slip away with the blink of an eye.

The story of Before Your Eyes is deep, emotional and deals with themes such as love, loss, family and human existence. The game makes you think about the meaning of your own life and the decisions you make. Try to find two hours of time for this game and you will see that you will not regret it.

DETROIT: BECOME HUMAN

Detroit: Become Human, on the other hand, is a well-known title compared to Before Your Eyes, but have you played it yet? If not, that’s okay, there’s still plenty of time to fix this mistake. In the genre of interactive storytelling, this is a significant game. As well as in the case of emotional acting that prompts reflection on ethical questions regarding technological progress and the human relationship to artificial intelligence with racial undertones. The game takes you to the near future, where androids have become a common part of people’s lives.

You will immerse yourself in three of these robots and experience their brilliantly told stories. Everyone’s journey is a little different. And each playthrough can be different thanks to the decision system, where every decision you make really matters. The stories can thus go in quite fundamentally different directions. Everything can turn out great. Or also completely terrible. It is the combination of these elements that will leave you in no doubt how great Detroit: Become Human is. And also that this is a game that everyone should experience at least once.

LIFE IS STRANGE

Now that we’ve had a taste of stories where you and only you decide the fate of people and the world around you, we shouldn’t forget the first part of the Life is Strange game series in the slightest.

The game takes place in the small town of Arcadia Bay and follows the story of a young girl named Max Caulfield who gains the ability to travel back in time. This ability allows you to influence events and puts you in the hands of complex decisions that affect the overall experience of the game. The story of Life is Strange focuses on themes such as coming of age, friendship and family. Throughout the game, you will have to deal with moral dilemmas, which in the end result in a wonderful and touching story that will not leave a single eye dry and that many people can empathize with.

SHADOW OF COLOSSUS

Another game that everyone should definitely play is Shadow of Colossus. In short, this is a title like no other. You take on the role of a little boy named Wander who travels to a forbidden land to save the life of a girl called Mono. To save the girl, he must defeat sixteen colossi. Each colossus is one big puzzle where you have to figure out its weaknesses and use them to defeat it.

Amazing gameplay along with an emotional, melancholic story that will show you that the world is not black and white and everything has its toll. The end of the story will then make you think about your own decisions that you have made yourself. It doesn’t matter if you go for the original version on PlayStation 2 or maybe a more modern version, but whatever you decide, don’t hesitate, it’s worth it.

MASS EFFECT 2

But if you like more action games and don’t like interactive movies, don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about you either. We shouldn’t forget one of the best sci-fi series. Specifically, the second part of Mass Effect. Again, this is a great story where your decisions really have a huge impact not only on your teammates, but on the entire universe. However, the players got more than that. Mass Effect offered us amazing characters, game mechanics, as well as action gameplay that is still great today. It is simply a masterpiece and now almost a cult work of the last generation, which should not be missed by any gaming fan.

THAT DRAGON CANCER

In any case, few people have heard of the last title on our list, but believe me, this is a game that no one should miss. Released in 2016, the game is largely an autobiographical experience that tells the story of a family’s battle with a little boy named Joel’s cancer.

That Dragon Cancer focuses on various moments and memories of Joel’s life and how the family copes with his illness and loss. It is a powerful video game experience that provokes thought about what it means to face death and loss. Although this is a small indie title, it deserves your attention all the more because it is a game that will open your horizons. That’s not the only reason everyone should play it.

But there are a lot of such games, so don’t be afraid to write us your personal tip down in the comments. We can also mention, for example, the interesting title What Remains of Edith Finch, which tells you an absolutely amazing story. Final Fantasy 7 shouldn’t be forgotten either. And we’ll see you again next time.
