Partial collapse of a building in Old Havana affects more than 60 families

On the night of this Friday, November 3, a partial collapse was recorded in a multi-family building located in the capital municipality of Habana Vieja, where 65 families lived.

According to a report from the Council of Administration of Old Havana, which was shared by several official media, the incident did not cause deaths or injuries, but the severity of the damage was not specified, nor whether the 65 families will be able to return to the building. or they will be displaced.

“Specialized forces of the Fire Department are currently working on the rescue and evacuation of people residing in a multi-family building on Cuba 113 / Chacon y Tejadilllo Street. 65 family units reside in the building, there are no deceased people,” states the official note.

As is usual in this type of notes, the opportunity was taken to carry out a bit of propaganda, with special emphasis on the fact that the main authorities of the Party and the Government of the capital and the forces of the Ministry of the Interior (Minint) arrived at the place. to “coordinate” the situation.

However, users on social networks denied the official version, pointing out that the collapse had left at least two people trapped under the rubble.

Internet user Claudia Núñez Rosquete, a resident of the affected building, published in the Facebook group ‘Alamar la Zona’ that they had already warned about the possibility of a collapse, but were ignored by the Castro authorities.

“After many years of enduring the apathy and abandonment of the government, the collapse we expected finally occurred, leaving two people trapped under the rubble, an elderly woman and a young man,” he wrote.

Núñez added that, since last week, partial collapses of the roof of one of the homes on the second floor had become more frequent, but it was not until this Friday that it collapsed completely, “taking the two homes below with it.”

“Several officials from both the government and the municipal housing department have appeared here, but the response has been the same; There are no resources,” he wrote.

The response, as expected, generated discontent in the user, who said that it seemed that the authorities were waiting for a misfortune to occur before they began to act.

“There are no resources to even remove a beam detached from one end, which is about to fall on the stairs where the neighbors on the second floor came down, and the roof, apparently they are waiting for it to fall under its own weight and crush anyone.” let him go through there,” he added.

As if that were not enough, Núñez stressed that, in front of the building that suffered the partial collapse, there is a new and recently remodeled hospital, something he considered a “waste of resources.”

“We do not want condolences on NTV, we need solutions for more than 65 families who live in the Cuba 103 building in Old Havana,” stressed the Internet user, who believes that the government uses the resources to build luxury hotels while the rest of the country falls apart.

“With the story that there are no resources, they have allowed a building to be destroyed that could have been saved while the city is filled with expensive hotels. Havana cries before the eyes of God and the Government,” the complaint concluded.
