SGS Essen remains on course for success in the women’s Bundesliga. On Saturday the team was able to surprise in Leverkusen.
SGS Essen remains undefeated for the third time in a row.
In the goalless draw in Leverkusen, coach Markus Högner’s team showed an absolutely convincing performance and were closer to victory for almost the entire game than the hosts, who have had a really strong season so far and are in fourth place in the table for good reason.
The Werkself initially started the game strongly, but after just a few minutes the Essen team had acclimatized, kept the game balanced and had a slight increase in chances.
But Bayer also had a great chance when SGS goalkeeper Sophia Winkler was able to prevent the deficit in a one-on-one situation.
Convincing second half for SGS Essen
So we went into the dressing room without any goals, from which the Ruhrstadt team returned as if unleashed and created opportunities like on a conveyor belt over the course of the second half. The best of these belonged to Annalena Rieke, who hit the ball onto the crossbar from a central position.
There was virtually nothing left from the hosts going forward. The SGS defended passionately and didn’t allow any real scoring opportunities against the second-best offense in the league.
Ultimately, the team couldn’t reward themselves for a great second half, but they can live with the performance and the point win, as Högner also confirmed.
“If someone had told me before the game that we would get a point in Leverkusen, I would have signed it straight away. But if you look at the 90 minutes now, then you have to say very clearly that we clearly did, especially in the second half “We were a better team,” said SGS coach Högner.
