A very cool shot of the Wachowski sisters… with a terrible mistake
Imagine that The Matrix had starred Will Smith. Well, it was almost like that: Keanu Reeves was second on the list after the star left everything to film… Wild Wild West. It can’t be said that he hit the nail on the head, really, although in hindsight he has stated that he would have destroyed the film and that Reeves was the perfect actor for the job. Of course, before reaching him the producer knocked on the doors of Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Sandra Bullock (!) and Val Kilmer. Take damage to the ego.

To prepare the film it was not enough to repeat the lines of dialogue: the Wachowskis wanted everyone to understand exactly what they meant with The Matrix, and to do so they brought philosophers to the set before production to give talks, in addition to making them read books on simulation and control of the machines. In the end, the success of the first part gave rise to three more installments, much more confusing but equally successful. Well. Except Matrix Resurrections, of course.
Perhaps the most spectacular thing about The Matrix is its shamelessness: it was all or nothing for its directors and they did everything they could to get the most out of filming. Even if that meant… falling into blunders. Gaps that they themselves knew they were going to see on the movie screen, but for which they did not find any solution. Do you remember the famous shot in which Morpheus goes to open the doorknob of the Oracle and sees himself reflected in it? Look closely at the reflection itself.

Indeed: they could not prevent a camera from being seen, although they tried to camouflage it with Laurence Fishburne’s coat. It’s impossible not to see it, even with the green stripe they painted to try to go unnoticed with the character’s tie. Now: Is it a mistake in the movie or a mistake in The Matrix? Ah! Everything can be, right?!
